Chapter 1 by Dalton D, Sam H, Siona K, and Mariam K

A shadowed figure sat at a starry pool. She looked around and screamed in horror, for she saw a blood-covered creature. The monster stared deep into her eyes, showing her a vision of her dark, bloody, gruesome death. She heard a voice, but she couldn’t make out what it was saying.
And then I awoke…….

“Max, get up,” Mom said sweetly. I rubbed my eyes and stretched. I had had the weirdest dream last night.  I yawned loudly and flopped back down onto my pillow. “Mom,” I groaned. “Do I have to get up, it’s Monday morning and I’m tired.”
“Don’t you remember sweetheart, today’s the day you’re finally going to ask him out. I glanced at the calendar. Today’s date was circled in bright, crimson, marker.
“Do I have to?” I asked my mom.
“If you want to have a date you do.” she replied.
“Then I’m going back to bed.” I argued.
“C’mon honey, You’ve got to do it.” Mom attempted on encouraging me, but I knew her tricks.
“But I don’t want to, and I’m tired.” I groaned.
“Fine, I’ll leave you in peace, but you’ll change your mind eventually.” Mom said sternly.
Wow. Mom never gives in that early. Something’s wrong.  Was she playing around with Daniel Miller again? I knew the two of them were a bucket-full of crazy.
I got out of bed. I looked at the small window  down the hallway.  No one was in sight of me. I slowly tip-toed to the window. I unlatched the hook, and pulled up the screen. I slowly crawled through the confined space.
When I got to the other side, I put the screen down, and re-latched the window. I quickly pulled it down.

I had successfully snuck out. The only problem was that I was in a completely new room, and someone was sitting in a desk a few feet away from me. I gasped.
Daniel Miller turned around just in time to see my eyes flare with purple flame and the falling of an antique vase.
“What are you doing here?” asked Daniel.
“Nothing.” I said dumbfoundedly. My power had never failed before. I quickly ducked under a small, round table, right before a shard of iron hit my left foot.
“What did you just do?” I asked.
 “Nothin.” He said.
“I know what you did, Daniel.  You’re such a traitor.” I said.
“You don’t know what I did, because I did nothing other than take out the bedroom keys,”he snapped.
“You didn’t take out the keys out of your pocket, there aren’t even any keys to this room.” I replied.
“How? Wha? Huh?” sputtered Daniel. I smiled with delight and rolled my eyes. I laughed, ran out of the room, picked up my backpack and lunch, said “Bye mom.” and ran out the door.

WAR? OR IS IT LOVE? by Mariam A. Kravchenko

War is a raging fire,
A sea of despair.
Full of tears,
And Grief.
A never-ending battle,
Of hatred and jealousy.
But also of love and affection.

The magic of love never ends,
War is one that love mends,
At first the rage of war overextends,
But with the help of love, it soon descends.

You can change most everything with love,
Hand in hand,
Together as one.

War can be defeated,
If you remember to love.

FRIEND OR FOE? Chapter Five by Mariam A. Kravchenko

Chapter Five

I arrive in a dark, damp cave, and I’m surprised that I’m not exhausted. Normally after I run for more than fifty miles, I vomit. Now, after sprinting hundreds of miles, I’m not even panting. I stride into the darkcave. Cold water drips on my head and I look up. Everything seems strange, and I don’t understand what’s happening. My senses seem magnified. I can hear even the slightest sound. My eyes zoom in on a little fruit fly that’s speeding around my head. My hand shoots out and I pinch it between my fingers. I shiver as a cold drop of water rolls down my arm.
I hear soft footsteps echoing through the cage. I duck behind a large rock.
“Jo?,” a soft voice rings out. “Josephine are you here?”
A tear rolls down my cheek.
“Leave,” I whisper. “You can’t be here.”
I shrink back, as he slowly walks around the rock. I turn away from him.
“Listen,” he tells me. “I can’t let you live like this. I can help you. We can get through this together.” Then, softly he adds, “I love you.” I turn to look at him. Stretched across his face is a sweet, friendly grin.
I turn pink.
“No,” I mumble.
“What did you say?,” he asks.
“I said no,” I say, throwing my voice out as far as I could.
I turn on my heel and run towards the morning sun.

Friend or Foe? Chapter Four by Mariam Kravchenko

Chapter Four
As soon as we walk in, there’s a sharp pang in my stomach. I double over and bite my lip to keep from crying out.
“Jo?,” Joseph asks. “Are you alright?”
When I don’t respond, he grabs me and flings me over his back. He holds onto me and runs up a circular flight of cold, stone stairs. He stops running moments later, and sets me down on a soft white and grey hammock, that’s stained with blood.. I moan and clutch my stomach.
“Jo!” he yells. “Jo, talk to me! What is it?”
I writhe and groan, but manage to scream:
“Dontfeelgoodneedsomethingidonthavehelpmehelpme HELP ME!”
Joseph gasps and his stunning green widen. He mutters under his breath.
“No way. Half-breeds don’t exist anymore. If anyone finds out she’ll be killed. Oh, my god.” This confuses me, but I have no time to focus.
“HELP ME!” I scream. I’m dizzy and I can’t focus. The room is spinning and it feels as though someone is clamping a cold, bony hand around my heart. It feels like there’s a tiger, biting and scratching and clawing to get out.
“Jo, I’m gonna go get you something that’ll help,” Joseph says to me. I nod weakly, and he runs out the door, closing it behind me.
Seconds later, a sense of power erupts throughout me. I leap to my feet and grab a knife from Joseph’s nightstand. It’s cool against my hand, with a sharp bronze tip and a copper handle.
Into the light mahogany wall, I carve the words:
‘I cannot control myself. I’m gone for now. Find me, and help me, or I’ll come back and kill you.’
Then below it, in Latin, I carve out:
‘Ego diligo vos. Nolo te occidere.’, meaning ‘I love you. I don’t want to kill you.’
I dip my fingers into the glass bottle of thick, crimson blood that Joseph keeps on his dresser and trace it messily over what I’ve carved. I pour the rest down my throat and gasp with pleasure. I take a few steps back and I leap out the window, feet-first, ignoring the sharp stings I get when the glass cuts my skin. I land softly on the hard, dirt ground and turn around, looking up at Joseph’s stained-glass window.
“Cya, Joseph.” I whisper softly into the darkness.

Friend or Foe? Chapter 3 by Mariam Kravchenko

“I smell human blood!,” is the first thing I hear from the Vampires, before I even enter their lair. I finger my ax gently, and look up at the Vampire. He looks at me reassuringly.
“I now realize I never caught your name,” I tell him.
“I now realize I never dropped my name,” he retorts cleverly. “Joseph Baker, at your service.”
I nod acknowledgingly and Joseph hold out his hand. I look up at him questioningly.
“Trust me,” he says. “They will not harm you if they know you’re with me.”
I nod and slowly lace my fingers through his. I look up at him and notice some things that I’ve never noticed before. Joseph’s eyes, though red and dark, are full of compassion. He looks scared, his lips quivering. I notice that he has a lip ring. How did I never see that? When his blonde, blue-tipped hair falls in his face, he doesn’t brush it away as he normally does. He seems to shrink back some. He looks incredible in the moonlight. So handsome.
I shake my head. What am I thinking? I have a boyfriend. Well, not anymore, really, but I am NOT gonna fall in love with this… creature.
“We’re here,” Joseph mutters, his voice trembling. His grip on my arm tightens. “Please, Jo, avoid eye contact. Only speak when asked a question, but speak as little as possible. Try to stand out as little as possible.”
I was shocked at how much he’d changed in such a short amount of time. When I first met him, he was cool and smooth. Now, he looked terrified.
“Are you okay?” I whisper as I look up at the huge building. I gape, but then shrink behind Joseph as a loud snarl rips through the night.
He nods.
“Come on,” he says. “Let’s go."

FRIEND OR FOE? Chapter 1 by MARIAM A. KRAVCHENKO

The Vampire stares at me, his long, glistening fangs extended. Blood dribbles down his chin, and his tongue lashes out to lick it off. He licks some blood off of his hands and my eyes flicker down to the dead girl at his feet.
I’d just witnessed a killing. I’d watched the life drain out of her eyes as quickly as the Vampire drained the blood from her veins. And I didn’t stop it.
“You’re next, sweetheart…,” he purrs. His voice is deep and husky, and his pale face twists into a smirk. His startling green eyes squint slightly, and he bites his lip. His eyebrow crawls upwards a little.
He takes  three long strides toward me and grabs me by the shoulders. He buries his head in my neck and I feel my a sharp pain. I whimper, collapse to my knees, and my world goes black.’

* * *

I chew on my pencil eraser. Stuck. I pick up my phone and scroll through my music. I find the Slipknot’s latest album, and press play. Just as my pencil touches the paper, the door opens. I groan and roll my eyes, and look up slowly. My boyfriend, Jacob Smith, stands in the doorway, a black bag in his hand. Something red drips from the bottom. I shut my notebook and set it on my bookshelf.
“Hey, Jacob,” I say slowly.
“Hello, Josephine,” He snarls.
Then, he leaps at me, kneeling on my back. He grabs my head and slams it into the wall repeatedly. I scream, but quickly, my screams turn to moans and I become silent. I slump down on the bed, unable to move. I can feel thick blood pouring down my face and I can see the crimson pooling on my sheets.
Jacob picks up my notebook and dips it into his bag. When he pulls it out, it’s coated in blood. He pulls a blood-covered gun out of the bag as well. How did that huge gun fit in that tiny bag? He places the gun on the notebook and starts chanting something that I cannot understand.
Est filius meus carissimus, et omnia mea. Cadent in fama. Homo cum sclopetis et concedo. Ieiunium debet currere, anima ejus erit faciendum.”
My notebook seems to glow, and I attempt to scream as it sucks me in, but I can’t, considering I’m less than half conscious. The last thing I hear is Jacob’s cry of:

FRIEND OR FOE? Chapter 2 by Mariam A. Kravchenko

My world is a blur, until I collapse onto hard ground. I try to wiggle my fingers, and I successfully do. I shakily push myself to my feet and steady myself against a nearby tree. The gun that Jacob had placed on my notebook is lying on a rock, along with a pile of some boxes of ammunition. I wobble over and took a closer look at my ‘gift’. There was a gun belt with large magazines packed with ammo and a built in holster. I look at the gun. A 9mm  Glock 43. Nice.
“The bullets in the gun and pre-loaded mags are silver. They can kill anyone or anything in this story, except for us. Silver can only harm us, to kill us, we must be beheaded,” a voice rings out. I look around and find a man who looks incredibly similar to Jacob leaning against a tree, his arms crossed, and his eyebrows raised.
“Jacob?,” I whisper. “Is that you?”
“No, Josephine,” He purrs. “I’m not your boyfriend. I can be your survival, or I can be your destruction. Which do you choose?”
I nibble my lip.
“Well, I would prefer survival, but you expected that, didn’t you. To survive, I must pay a price, I assume?”
“You’re a clever little girl,” He hisses.
I play dumb.
“I’m not a little girl. I’m nineteen.”
He snarls.
“Don’t toy with me, girl. I can just kill you right here, right now. I recommend you shut up.”
I shut up.
“Good,” he hissed. Then, his voice became casual. “So, as I was saying, you can kill me, I can give you an ax, but if you do, you are sure to die.” He holds out a small ax.
“Wow,” I mutter. “Why is everything so convenient in this place?”
He laughs softly.
“Come. I shall take you to my lair. You will meet my kind, and I shall make sure they bring you no harm.” He turns and starts walking.
I hesitate for a moment, then follow him. Together, we walk into the darkness.

Pokemon Go Doing Police Officer’s Jobs? by Mariam A. Kravchenko

A Pokemon Go player who was trying to “catch ‘em all” ended up getting caught by police. A wanted man playing Pokemon Go was caught standing by a flagpole in his pajamas right in front of the Police Station - which also happens to be a Pokemon Gym. Pokemon Go led him right to the Station, where Police Officers arrested him.

“I think he was more upset that he had to stop playing the game than that he was caught!,” says the Police Chief.

24-year-old William Wilcox was arrested Thursday morning for an outstanding arrest warrant after police in Milford, Michigan, saw him playing Pokemon Go outside of the station, which is also a Pokemon gym.
